GitHub Mobile: Looking Back at 2024

In 2024, GitHub Mobile saw exciting updates designed to make coding and collaboration more seamless on the go. This year's updates elevated the mobile experience, from the introduction of powerful AI tooling to accessibility enhancements. Let's dive into some of the highlights for both platforms:

Workflow Dispatching

Managing workflows has never been easier. GitHub Mobile now lets you kick off new GitHub Actions workflows directly from your mobile device. Whether you're reviewing a pull request or resolving an issue, you can trigger workflow runs seamlessly from the app's interface.

Accessibility: A Core Priority

At GitHub, accessibility is a core commitment. In 2024, we rolled out a host of accessibility improvements:

• Voiceover and Screen Reader Support: Enhanced TalkBack and VoiceOver descriptions across screens, including trending repositories, pull request headers, and profile achievements.
• Dynamic Type Support: Better large font handling for all app elements and across a range of devices.
• Keyboard Navigation: Improved navigation in core areas like the Home, Repository, and Projects screens, making it easier to navigate and interact with the mobile apps using just a keyboard.

Convenience, Productivity, and Security

This year's updates delivered new features designed to streamline workflows and improve user security:

• Focused Notifications: We introduced a new “Focused” filter in the Inbox, prioritizing important updates.
• App Lock: Secure your GitHub app with biometrics or device credentials.
• Improved PR Process: Code reviews have been refined on both platforms. You can now glance at pull requests to see if you've been requested to review and engage with a more intuitive review process.
• File Browsing Improvements: Long file names now wrap for better readability, and we have improved directory support for iPad.
• Status Updates: Personalize and update your status directly from your profile, keeping your team up to date on your availability.
• Improved SSO Process: When accessing content that is gated behind an organization's SSO, we allow you to try to authenticate with that organization if appropriate instead of having to logout and do so at first sign-in.
• Social Enhancements: Profiles now support links to BlueSky and X accounts. The experience of mentioning users has been improved, and bots are included in @-mention suggestions.
• Global Code Search: Search for code anywhere on GitHub, from your phone.

Copilot

One of the most significant advancements this year is the enhanced integration of GitHub Copilot into the mobile experience.

• Copilot Chat: Now available on both iOS and Android, Copilot Chat enables developers to ask questions, gain insights, and receive coding assistance tailored to the current context. Whether you're viewing a specific file, repository, an issue or a pull request, Copilot Chat adapts to where you are in the app. Learn more about context.
• Extensions: GitHub Copilot Extensions are available in early access (TestFlight on iOS and Beta for Android), allowing developers to extend Copilot's capabilities with third-party tools, automate tasks, and receive personalized code suggestions.

Platform-Specific Highlights

iOS

• App Icons: iOS now supports four unique app icons, letting you personalize your app experience.
• Pull Request Widget: A new Home screen widget keeps your Pull Requests just a glance away.

Android

• Pinned Repositories: Pin repositories directly to your home screen for quick access.
• Contribution Widgets: View your GitHub contribution graph on your device's home screen.
• Backtick and Emoji Support: Markdown features like backticks and emoji shortcodes, already available on iOS, are now fully supported on Android for issue, PR, and discussion titles.
