How to use .chezmoidata

I am really confused about how to use this feature. I've read many docs and questions and I can't manage to use this.

What I tried:

• Create a .chezmoidata.toml on my home
• contents:

foo = bar

• chezmoi add .chezmoidata.toml
• `chezmoi execute-template '{{ .foo }}'
• Getting template: arg1:1:3: executing "arg1" at <.foo>: map has no entry for key "foo"

Can you help?

You shouldn't use chezmoi add with chezmoi-specific files such as .chezmoidata.toml, as they typically should not exist in your destination directory.

I suspect that chezmoi add .chezmoidata.toml created dot_chezmoidata.toml, which will not work as expected.

Ok, I've removed it from the source. Now I only have it in my home directory, but it is still not working.

Apologies for the misunderstanding, that is not what I meant.

You want the file in your source directory, not your home directory, and it needs to be named .chezmoidata.toml, not dot_chezmoidata.toml.

You want to end up with .local/share/chezmoi/.chezmoidata.toml.

If you use .chezmoiroot, then I think you need to put it in there instead. If you had home in your .chezmoiroot, you would want it to be in .local/share/chezmoi/home/.chezmoidata.toml.

Ok, I've cleaned everything up. Now I created it in my .local/share/chezmoi

Now I get

.local/share/chezmoi/.chezmoidata.toml: toml: incomplete number

Also I don't understand your second statement. Do I need a .chezmoiroot if i don't need to specify a different home directory?

My apologies, I understand what's happening. I need to wrap bar with quotes. Now it works.

Now for the next question. I want to use templates in my .chezmoidata.toml. So I renamed it to .chezmoidata.toml.tmpl

But now it doesn't work anymore...

Templates aren't supported for .chezmoidata files. If you need templated data you need to add a data section to your config template and add it there (note the data.email in the example).
